Crisis in Education!

Today, four out of five 8th graders aren’t proficient in civics and only 9 percent of fourth-graders can identify Abraham Lincoln (Joe Foss Institute). The Governor’s Youth Commission (GYC) would like to change that. Throughout the year, the GYC will be educating young people about America’s civic history, as well as preparing high school seniors for the civics test required for graduation. Civics Flash Cards, which are the actual questions on the required civics test, will be used to quiz high school students to help them sharpen their basic civic knowledge as they prepare for the civics test. To show the importance of patriotism for Veterans Day, the GYC will give presentations in their government classes about why civics education is important, what it entails, and how other youth can get involved in their communities. The GYC will also hold mock elections in their schools to reinforce that voting does matter and that their voice makes a difference! Veteran speakers from the Joe Foss Institute will also be invited to share their personal stories while also delivering educational material covering history, civics, government and public service.
